Branched-chain amino acid aminotransferase activities in tumor-bearing rats and mice
Ho Moon-Yong
Abstract
The branched-chain amino acid: 2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase (EC 2. 6. 1. 6) activities of various organs, i.e., liver, heart, kidney and neoplastic tissues from rats and mice bearing Ehrlich ascites tumor cells, Sarcoma 180 ascites tumor cells and Walker 256 sarcoma have been studied.
The enzyme activities were found to be significantly increased in host organs of tumor-bearing animals. However, the neoplastic tissues showed a marked increase in the enzyme activity. The amount of increase varied with the type of tumor.
Isoleucine was found to be the best substrate, followed by valine and leucine for all the organs tested. The greatest enzyme activity was in heart muscle, kidney and liver in decreasing order in normal as well as in tumor-bearing animals.
